The Eleven Fundamental Duties of Indian citizens

The Fundamental Duties are the moral obligations that the Indian citizen should obey to live with dignity in the country. There are a total of eleven fundamental duties that are mentioned in the constitution in Part IV- A. The fundamental duties are the sole power to promote the feeling of patriotism and strengthen, unity in the country.

The fundamental duties are added to the constitution by the amendments of the 42nd and 86th constitutional amendments. They are the directive principles of the state policy which are the section that elaborates the obligations, duties and rights of the Indian citizens.

The fundamental duties are incorporated in the constitution by the 42 amendments they are drafted by the moral, ethical, and cultural code of conduct followed by the Indian citizens.  The fundamental duties mentioned in the Indian constitution are borrowed from the USSR.

The 42nd amendment act was passed in the year 1976 and introduced article 51 A in the constitution. The committee recommended the duties of Indian citizens in the Swaran Singh Committee. These responsibilities of the Indian citizens mentioned in article 51 A of the constitution define the basic moral duties which make the Indian citizen a responsible citizen.

The duties of the Indian citizens mentioned are mentioned below-

  • Abide by the Constitution and respect the National Flag and National Anthem. 
  • Indian citizens should follow the ideals of the freedom struggle.
  • To ensure the protection of sovereignty and integrity of India.
  • Defending the country rendering the national services when they called upon.
  • The spirit of common brotherhood.
  • Preserving the composite culture.
  • To preserve the natural environment of the country.
  • To develop a scientific temper.
  • To safeguard public property.
  •  To strive for excellence. 
  • The compulsory duties of the parents and guardians regarding their children who belong to the age group of 6-14 years to the school level.

The duties of the Indian citizen mentioned in the constitution amendment act in article 51 A are the moral values that the Indian citizen must follow to maintain the welfare and the sovereignty of their country. The fundamental duties give pride and respect to the mind of the citizens of India.

The fundamental duties of the Indian citizens if obeyed properly can help in the nation-building process.  The fundamental duties are the quality of the responsible Indian citizen. The duties of the Indian citizens are free from any kind of boundary for a particular religion, customs, or any other particular group.

The responsibilities of the Indian citizen mentioned in article 51 A of the constitution come to form the basic principles and the moral values that the Indian citizens are getting from their ancestors for millions of years. The constitution is the topmost and the final written documented manual which contains the final law and orders.
